About this studio
Swing Tyne is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation dedicated to swing dancing in Newcastle and the North East. Founded nearly 15 years ago, the group meets every Monday evening at two venues within a 2-minute walk of each other: Summerhill Bowling Club (for Lindy Hop and social dancing) and St Matthew's Church (for Balboa and Collegiate Shag).
The organisation teaches four different swing dances. Lindy Hop classes run every Monday at 7:30pm with Fundamentals (7:30–8:10pm) and Improvers (8:20–9:00pm) tracks. Collegiate Shag and Balboa classes alternate fortnightly, also at 7:30pm with the same structure. The school encourages switching roles, dancing outside primary positions, and removing gender biases. All classes are suitable for complete beginners, and no partner is required—you can come alone and will be rotated with other dancers. Your first visit is free.
After the classes, social dancing runs from 9:00pm to 10:30pm every Monday at Summerhill Pavilion & Gardens, where you can practise moves and dance to live music when available. The group holds monthly social dancing nights at a bar in town and actively supports local musicians. Swing Tyne also runs a summer festival (Summer Tyne Swing) with multiple days of workshops, socials, and live bands, held at Northumbria University Students Union.
The organisation maintains active welfare policies and a code of conduct focused on safety, consent, and inclusive dance culture. All profit and surpluses go back into the club and swing dancing in Newcastle. You can join their mailing list for updates on events and news.
What to expect
Your first visit
Arrive at 7:00pm on Monday at Summerhill Bowling Club or St Matthew's Church. You'll start with a Fundamentals class for beginners covering basic steps and rhythm. After a 10-minute break, an Improvers class runs if you want to join. Social dancing follows from 9:00pm where you mix with other dancers, try out moves, and often dance to live music. No booking needed, no partner required, and your first time is free.
