About this studio
SwingStation teaches Lindy Hop, the partner dance that emerged in 1930s Harlem alongside Big Band swing and jazz. It's a joyful, improvisational dance built on connection with your partner and the music. The studio offers classes across four levels — from Beginner Lindy Hop 1 (Thursdays 7–8pm) through to Intermediate–Advance Lindy Hop 4 (Mondays 7:30–9pm) — plus Balboa, a close-hold swing dance designed for tight spaces, taught Thursdays 9–10pm.
Classes run Mondays and Thursdays. Beginner classes are open to anyone with no prior Lindy Hop experience and are designed to get you on the dance floor fast. Intermediate and advanced classes require prior experience — Lindy Hop 2 assumes you've completed at least 2 months of beginner classes and know 6 and 8 count footwork, Swing Out and Lindy Turns. Lindy Hop 3 requires at least 1 year of experience and is by invite only. Lindy Hop 4, for dancers with at least 2 years' experience, goes deeper into style and creativity.
Every Monday from 8:30–10pm, SwingStation hosts a weekly social dance party at Aliwal Arts Centre with DJ'd music spanning Swing Jazz from the 1930s–40s. Entry is $5, pay at the door — no pre-registration needed. The venue has a sprung dance floor added in early 2020 to enhance the dancing experience.
The team is led by Lim Sing Yuen, who has been Lindy Hopping since 1988 in London's Jitterbugs club and has won the US Open, American Swing Dance Championships and Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown in New Orleans. She began teaching Lindy Hop in Singapore in 1996 and is committed to sharing the Afro-American history and culture of jazz and Lindy Hop. Tan Hong Wee, who started Lindy Hop in 2000, teaches with a focus on making swing sociable and fun. Alexandra Lau, dancing since 2013, brings infectious enthusiasm to the classes.
SwingStation traces its roots to 2015, when Timbre Music Academy joined forces with Lindy teachers to create Lindy Live @ The House of Timbre. In January 2019, this partnership became SwingStation, operating from Timbre X @ The Substation with live jazz from partner High Notes Music. Activities paused in 2020 due to Covid-19. In 2022, as restrictions eased, SwingStation resumed teaching and social dancing in managed conditions, relocating to Aliwal Arts Centre.
What to expect
Your first visit
Arrive in comfortable shoes and light clothing. Beginner classes introduce you to the fundamentals in a supportive setting designed to get you on the dance floor quickly. You'll learn basic footwork and partner connection. Social Monday nights are casual — pay $5 at the door, dance to DJ'd swing jazz, and meet the community.

The team includes Lim Sing Yuen, a champion dancer (US Open, American Swing Dance Championships, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown winner) who has taught Lindy Hop in Singapore since 1996; Tan Hong Wee, who dances for the joy and connection of the partnership; and Alexandra Lau, who fell in love with the dance in 2013 and teaches with infectious enthusiasm.

In January 2019 it became SwingStation, operating from Timbre X @ The Substation with live jazz from High Notes Music. A sprung dance floor was added in early 2020. Activities paused during Covid-19, and resumed in 2022 at Aliwal Arts Centre.
