About this studio
Tango Bajo is one of Melbourne's most established Argentine tango schools and milonga organisers. Founded in 1999 by Bill Jarman, the studio has been central to Melbourne's tango community for over two decades.
The studio offers group classes on Thursday nights from 7:30–9pm at 12 Surrey Road, South Yarra. These are open-level classes taught by Bill Jarman and Leigh Rogan, two of Melbourne's most experienced and well-respected tango teachers. No partner is required to attend. The group setting allows you to connect with other dancers while learning from instructors who combine technical skill with a focus on musicality and intuitive movement.
If you want to accelerate your progress, Tango Bajo offers customised private lessons for beginners through advanced dancers. These are available for leaders, followers, and couples, taught at the Surrey Road venue or by prior arrangement at a location of your choice. Private lessons are tailored to your individual learning style and tango priorities.
The studio also runs regular milongas — social tango dances — held on the 2nd, 4th and occasional 5th Saturday of each month at Earthen Vessels Church Hall, also at 12 Surrey Road. These milongas, called 'la mision', are the heart of Melbourne's social tango scene and a way to connect with the broader tango community across Melbourne, interstate and internationally.

What to expect
Your first visit
Thursday night group classes run from 7:30–9pm at the studio. You'll work with experienced teachers in an open-level environment where no partner is required. Classes focus on technique, musicality and connection to the music and your dance partner.

Who teaches here
Bill Jarman is the founder and principal teacher. A tertiary-qualified dance teacher and seasoned dancer with over twenty-five years' experience teaching Argentine tango, Bill trained at the New Zealand School of Dance and the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company before moving to Melbourne. Leigh Rogan co-teaches the group classes and is among Melbourne's most respected tango teachers.

Tango Bajo was founded in 1999 by Bill Jarman, making it one of Melbourne's first tango schools. Jarman brings a background in ballet, contemporary dance, musical theatre and dance education, having trained at the New Zealand School of Dance and performed with European companies before returning to Australia to focus on tango.
