Tango Burnaby

Tango Burnaby is a studio and social dance venue founded by Geraldine Goyer, a performer and educator with 35+ years of Argentine Tango experience. The studio teaches authentic Argentine Tango at beginner and intermediate levels, alongside occasional Ballroom and Latin dance classes. Geraldine's approach centers on connecting students with the music, their dance partners, and the dance floor, with emphasis on the foundational aspects of Tango such as the walk, the embrace, and musicality.

The studio runs regular 8-week class series on Wednesday evenings at Sperling Studio (Lochdale Hall), 490 Sperling Ave. Beginner classes run 7–8 PM, intermediate 8–9 PM, and a 2-hour guided practice session is offered for $5. An afternoon Ballroom & Latin class meets for 3 weeks on Thursdays at 4858 Imperial St. All classes welcome dancers of all ages and experience levels; no partner or prior experience is required. The studio rotates partners during class so students dance with multiple people and builds balanced groups through pre-registration.

Beyond regular classes, Tango Burnaby hosts milongas (social tango dances) and runs a Summer Tango Mini Festivalito featuring eight Wednesday sessions with visiting maestros, including opening and closing milongas with DJs. Past Festivalito instructors have included Albano Goldenberg, Deborah Lynne, and Lya Elcagu, covering topics from musicality and technique to nuevo tango, tango vals, and chacarera. The studio also offers private lessons and choreography work, including for wedding first dances.

On your first visit to a beginner class, you'll learn correct posture, balance, and weight placement before moving into walking with a partner in close embrace. Classes rotate partners every two to three minutes so you'll dance with many people. By the end of the eight-week course, you'll have the foundation to attend social milongas. No experience or partner is needed; come solo and you'll meet other dancers.

Geraldine Goyer (known as Gigi) is the founder and principal instructor, with 35+ years of Argentine Tango experience as both performer and educator. She teaches all regular group classes. The Summer Tango Mini Festivalito features visiting maestros including Albano Goldenberg, Deborah Lynne, Lya Elcagu, and Geraldine herself.

The studio welcomes complete beginners and explicitly states no experience or partner is required; classes are designed to be inclusive and supportive.
