About this studio

Tango Inside Out operates from Atelier SOL in Vienna's 10th district (Maria-Lassnig-Straße 33, Atelier 1.02). The school combines regular weekly classes with frequent milongas and hosts visiting international instructors for workshops.

The teaching philosophy centres on improvisation as the core of tango, rather than fixed sequences. Classes emphasise presence, curiosity, personality, communication and conscious breathing, drawing on exercises from dance, theatre and general body technique. Tango is presented not as a dance with a steady pulse (the Orquesta Típica has no percussion), but as a dance of rhythm, phrasing and melody — to be felt as emotion and colour rather than counted beats. The lead-follow dynamic is reframed: both partners give impulses and listen attentively in both directions.

Weekly classes run at two levels. The Basics course covers walking (Caminatas), embrace, Ochos, Cross, Parada and Lapiz, and suits absolute beginners or those revisiting fundamentals. The Intermediate course builds on these with Giro, Sacadas, Cross-System, backward crosses and close embrace, and assumes prior experience and milonga attendance.

Open classes run on Thursday evenings at 19:30 with Ana & Jorge (Tanto Tango) from September onwards, focusing on musicality, rhythm, phrasing and melody. Jorge brings 20 years of tango experience; Ana specialises in body awareness and movement. Classes finish with 1–2 sequences ready for the milonga. A second open-class series runs at Galeria Ideal with Iris, Gottfried and Helmut, covering topics like density and elasticity, backward crosses and boleos, circular energy, media luna and sacada, and giro variations.

The milonga, Summer Tango Milonga SOL, follows Thursday classes. Drop-in students can upgrade for 5 euros; course participants attend free. Private lessons are also available. The school runs workshops with international instructors including Majo Martirena and Rodrigo Fonti, and offers video courses (Basics and Intermediate) alongside live teaching, plus YouTube tutorials covering solo and couple exercises, ochos, embrace, cross combinations, tango nuevo, giro, tango music seminars, mastering syncopation, and elements of tango. Music lectures cover D'Arienzo, Di Sarli, Troilo, Pugliese and Tanturi. Entrance is possible at any time.
