About this studio
Tanzlabor Leipzig is a mixed-abled dance company and initiative for contemporary dance in Leipzig, particularly for people with disability experience. The organisation has operated for 17 years, originating when the youth group Rollingcats met choreographer Heike Hennig at Die VILLA socio-cultural centre and continued dancing from there.
The company operates across three pillars: free dance sessions, dance workshops, and dance productions. Free dance (Freier Tanz) is an open rehearsal for participants with or without prior experience. Tanzlabor Junior offers weekly classes on Fridays from 16:00 to 18:00 at the youth centre within VILLA, serving children and teenagers from 8 years old. The Tanzwerkstatt provides a variety of further training formats and exchange with other dance companies.
Tanzlabor Leipzig produces mixed-abled stage performances showcasing the company's work to audiences. Recent productions include 'Parallele Welten' with performances on 25, 26, and 27 September 2026. The company also runs specialist workshops: a Contact Improvisation workshop was led by Gosia Gajdemska and Britta Kerger, combining contemporary dance, contact improvisation, and somatic practices.
The studio offers training programmes including Ausbildung zur Tanzanleiter:in für mixed-abled Tanzen (instructor training for mixed-abled free dance), with Level 1 in 2025 and Level 2 in 2026, as well as Ausbildung zur Tanzentwickler:in für Tanzperformances (training for dance developers in performance). Who teaches here
The company includes long-term members who have danced with Tanzlabor for 17 years and rotating participants. Workshops are led by experienced choreographers and dance pedagogues: Gosia Gajdemska is a choreographer, dancer and dance pedagogue trained in contemporary dance and choreography in Kraków, Essen, and London, practising contact improvisation since 2009; Britta Kerger has been active as a dancer since 1983 and has worked as a freelance dance pedagogue since 2019.

Tanzlabor Leipzig developed 17 years ago from the youth group Rollingcats, who met choreographer Heike Hennig at Die VILLA socio-cultural centre. The spontaneous invitation to a dance session led to continuous dancing and eventually the foundation of Tanzlabor Leipzig.
