About this studio
Union Salsa Dance Company has been running since 1984, founded on the idea of bringing South American culture to the Netherlands and creating a place to celebrate it. The school is now based at the Union Latin Lounge on Biltstraat 37 in Utrecht, where it has been since 2015. It offers the largest course selection in Utrecht and surrounding areas.
The studio teaches salsa (including Salsa Cubana), bachata, kizomba, and Rueda de Casino, as well as specialised classes in Lady Styling and Personal Performance Training. All regular courses run for 7 weeks, with each lesson lasting 60 minutes. Classes are offered at multiple levels: beginners 1, 2 and 3; intermediate 1, 2, 3 and 4; advanced 1–8; and proficient. You can join at any level whether you have no dance experience or are already experienced—a level check at one of the parties helps you find the right class.
Every Friday, a free trial salsa lesson for beginners runs from 19:30–20:30. You can also request trial lessons in other styles by contacting the studio. Once you sign up for a course, you get an account in AllDance, the student portal where you manage your lessons, log absences (with at least 4 hours' notice), and sign up for follow-on courses at the next level.
The Union Latin Lounge itself doubles as a social venue. Latin Nights happen every Thursday and Saturday from 21:00, welcoming both students and non-students. Every Saturday features a free workshop from 21:00–22:00 with a different theme each week, followed by dancing. There is also a Bachata Special on the third Saturday of each month. The studio also runs group workshops, bachelorette and corporate team events, private workshops, bootcamps, private lessons, and opening dances (such as for weddings).
Instructions are given in both Dutch and English depending on the class mix, keeping things accessible regardless of language. You do not need your own dance partner—the studio balances leaders and followers in each lesson, though you are welcome to bring a regular partner. For shoes, smooth soles with little tread work best, though this is not required for beginner lessons. Comfortable, breathable clothing is all you need.
