West Coast Swing Cape Town

West Coast Swing Cape Town is a volunteer-led community teaching West Coast Swing across Cape Town. The group began in 2023 when about ten dancers, scattered across the city and learning independently from online videos, came together in a living room. That first gathering—ten people attempting their first sugar pushes together—has grown into an organised community with a teaching team and regular classes.

The turning point came in September 2024 at Safari Swing, South Africa's first international West Coast Swing event in Johannesburg. Community leaders attended the full weekender and workshops, connecting with world-class instructors and the international WCS community for the first time. Weeks later, two of the community leads returned to Johannesburg for private lessons with Lauren and Daniel. In December 2024, Harold Baker spent two weeks in Cape Town running teacher training, workshops, and one-on-one coaching—a visit that gave the teaching team the language and structure to explain WCS concepts clearly.

Classes run on Monday nights in Plumstead. The community also hosts socials where dancers test new concepts together, and the teaching team meets regularly to study workshop videos and refine their understanding. The leadership team includes Mercia (Chairperson and Lead Teacher), Tim (Teaching and Lead Teacher), Michael E (Treasurer and Level 2 Teacher), Michael R (Music and Level 1 Teacher), Liam (Events and Level 1 Teacher), plus Level 1 teachers James, Elaine, Monique, Priyanka, and Victoria. All teachers lead and follow, and can teach both roles at their level.

West Coast Swing itself is a modern social dance built on connection, musicality, and improvisation rather than fixed patterns. It evolves with contemporary music—Pop, R&B, Blues, Hip Hop—and is a smoothed-out evolution from Lindy Hop. The community emphasises flexible connection, gender neutrality, social inclusivity, and true partnership. The group offers group classes, occasional bootcamps, socials-only attendance, private lessons, and training for those interested in learning to teach. They operate across multiple Cape Town locations including Plumstead, Southern Suburbs, City Bowl, Northern Suburbs, Atlantic Seaboard, and South Peninsula.

The community is transparent about its nature: they are not professional WCS instructors, but people who fell in love with the dance and are learning it properly to share it with others in Cape Town. They describe themselves as still learning, still figuring things out, still spending considerable time analysing connection quality and debating technique. The experience is deliberately hands-on and collaborative—you learn alongside people who have wrestled with the same questions you're asking.

Classes and socials happen in Plumstead at Havana Nights, typically Monday nights. You'll be learning from volunteer teachers who all lead and follow, working with a community that's transparent about still being on their own learning journey and genuinely invested in helping newcomers understand WCS principles rather than memorise steps.

The teaching team includes Lead Teachers Mercia and Tim; Level 2 Teachers Mercia, Tim, and Michael E (who also teach Level 1); and Level 1 Teachers Liam, Michael R, James, Elaine, Monique, Priyanka, and Victoria. All teachers lead and follow and can teach both roles at their level. The community was trained by visiting international instructors including Harold Baker, who spent two weeks in December 2024 running teacher training and workshops.

The community welcomes beginners and runs Level 1 classes; they emphasise learning together and note that you won't have to figure it out alone.
