About this studio
Groovy Tuesdays is San Jose's dedicated West Coast Swing community hub, run by professional dancer and instructor Austin Kois in partnership with Ken Padron and the Starlite Ballroom. Every Tuesday night, over 100 dancers gather for beginner and intermediate lessons followed by nearly 3 hours of social dancing.
The beginner class runs 7:45–8:30pm and covers foundational West Coast Swing from scratch each week: basic rhythms (walks and triple-steps), foundations of connection (frame, compression, and extension), and basic pattern structures including the Left Side Pass, Right Side Pass, Sugar Push, Sugar Tuck, and Whip. The intermediate class runs 7:00–7:45pm and focuses on new variations, technique refinement, and musicality for dancers who already know the basics.
West Coast Swing is a partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop, characterised by smooth, elastic movement and an improvisational element that lets both partners create steps and movements together. You don't need to bring a partner — the studio rotates partners during classes and social dancing so you can meet new people. You can also choose which role (Leader or Follower) appeals to you, or learn both.
Both group classes include access to the social dancing that follows ($20 per class). Social dancing only is $10. Drop-in with no pre-registration required — just show up and register before class. Private lessons are also available with flexible scheduling for individual focus and pointed feedback.
The studio meets at the Starlite Ballroom, located at 5178 Moorpark Ave #60 in San Jose. Classes are designed to be welcoming to dancers of all kinds, with an emphasis on enjoyment and community rather than competition.
