About this studio
The Western Swing Society is a registered nonprofit established in 1981 in Sacramento, California by Loyd and Perry Jones. Its mission is the preservation, promotion and enjoyment of Western Swing music as an American art form. The Society presents regular public dances with live Western Swing music, provides financial assistance to young students interested in becoming Western Swing musicians, and maintains a Western Swing Hall of Fame honouring individuals whose performance and efforts have significantly contributed to the preservation and promotion of western swing music.
Western Swing music is a division of American jazz that combines blues, Dixieland, ragtime, big-band, swing, country, pop and breakdowns. It is defined by improvisation and a heavy accent on the beat, making it distinctly danceable. The art form was rooted in the Southwestern Region of the United States, in and around Texas and Oklahoma, and took on a consistent sound pioneered by Bob Wills, Milton Brown and their associates during the 1930s.
The Society holds monthly dances on the first Sunday of each month from 1pm to 5:30pm at the Machinists Hall in Rancho Cordova, located at 2749 Sunrise Blvd (behind Enterprise Car Rental). These events feature live bands and dance lessons. Dance lessons with Dave West run from 12pm to 1pm, preceding the featured live music performances. The Society is governed by a Board of elected Directors and appointed officials, with elections held annually.
Funding for the Society's operations comes from annual membership fees, donations and admission and raffle ticket sales at monthly music sessions. The organisation is supported by a dedicated volunteer team including board directors, staff and committee chairs who manage everything from admissions and the bar to equipment, sound engineering and public relations.

Your first visit
Monthly dances on the first Sunday of each month, 1pm to 5:30pm, at the Machinists Hall in Rancho Cordova. Optional dance lessons with Dave West run from 12pm to 1pm, followed by live Western Swing bands. A bar is available, and admission is by ticket.
