Overview
Founded in 1956 by Dr. Helena Z. Benitez as the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group at the Philippine Women's University, and organised the following year as the Bayanihan Folk Arts Center with the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company as its performing arm. Republic Act No. 8626 (1998) declared the company "The Philippines National Folk Dance Company", the Act stating the State policy "to appropriately recognize, designate and support nongovernment organizations that have demonstrated pioneering, long, consistent and unassailable competence" in Philippine folk arts. Its stated mission is to research on and preserve indigenous Philippine art forms in music, dance, costume and folklore.
