Best For
Lindy Hop dancers and historians preserving swing dance heritage
Overview
The Frankie Manning Foundation was established in 2009 to preserve and promote the legacy of Frankie Manning, the legendary Lindy Hop dancer and choreographer who is widely regarded as the ambassador of swing dance. The foundation supports swing dance education, preserves historical archives, and promotes the African American roots of Lindy Hop.
History
Founded in 2009, shortly after Frankie Manning's passing at age 94.
Manning was an original Savoy Ballroom dancer who helped create and popularize the Lindy Hop in the 1930s-40s.
He choreographed the first-ever air step (aerial) in Lindy Hop and appeared in films like 'Hellzapoppin' (1941).
After decades away from dance, Manning was rediscovered in the 1980s swing revival and spent his final 20 years teaching worldwide.
The foundation preserves his archives, supports dance education programs, and advocates for recognition of Lindy Hop's African American origins.
