Uniting the world's swing dance community
Best For
Swing dancers seeking community competition and world championships
Overview
World Swing Dance Council. Sanctions swing competitions and runs the World Swing Dance Championships annually. Emphasizes fun, partner switching, and cultural inclusivity.
History
The WSDC was formed in 2006 to provide unified governance for the West Coast Swing competitive community.
Before WSDC, swing competitions operated independently with no centralized ranking system.
The organization introduced the global point system that tracks dancers' competitive placements across WSDC-registered events worldwide.
WSDC also oversees the annual US Open Swing Dance Championships and Champions Invitational.
The swing community values social dancing alongside competition — WSDC events always include social dance floors open to all attendees.
WSDC has grown to register events across North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America.
Governance & Structure
WSDC is governed by a board that includes event directors, competitors, and community leaders.
Events must register with WSDC to contribute to the official ranking system.
The organization maintains rules for competition format, music, judging criteria, and competitor conduct.
WSDC's distinctive feature: competitors are often judged dancing with partners assigned by random draw (Jack & Jill format).
Competition Structure
Jack & Jill: Random-partner competitions where leads and follows are matched by draw — the signature WSDC format.
Strictly Swing: Choreographed routine divisions.
Classic: Semi-improvised showcase divisions.
Rising Star: Emerging competitor category.
Divisions by points: Newcomer, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, All-Star, Champion.
Points accumulate from registered events to determine division eligibility.
