Overview

UK charity launched in 1971 as the Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society (Dame Marie Rambert was its first President), now The Historical Dance Society. It promotes "public education in and appreciation of the performance, costume and music of European and other dances from the 15th to 20th centuries" through summer schools, study days, conferences and the peer-reviewed journal Historical Dance. Historic dance is reconstructed from treatises rather than continuously governed, so the Society researches and teaches; it does not sanction competition.
