Overview
Constituent unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, described on the Akademi's site as "the premier dance institution for the Indian classical dance form of Kathak". Founded in 1955 as the Kathak division of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and taken over by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1964; moved to Bahawalpur House, New Delhi in July 1969. Headed initially by Pandit Shambhu Maharaj of the Lucknow gharana, later by Birju Maharaj. Also offers Hindustani vocal, pakhawaj and tabla.
