National Pan-Hellenic Council
Overview
The National Pan-Hellenic Council was organized on May 10, 1930, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Its own site states that "Since 1930, NPHC has united the Divine Nine around service, scholarship, leadership and collective action," and gives its purpose as "Advancing unity, service, scholarship and leadership across the Divine Nine." The Divine Nine are the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities that make up the council; the University of Michigan's Fraternity and Sorority Life office describes stepping and strolling as "deeply embedded within D9 traditions."
