Jurij Batagelj

Jurij Batagelj is a Slovenian International Latin competitor who rose through the world dancesport system to become a finalist at major global championships. Representing Slovenia in World DanceSport Federation competition, Batagelj's defining partnership was with Jagoda Štrukelj, with whom he registered officially on 23 August 1999.

The partnership's trajectory shows steady progress through the late 2000s. By 2008, Batagelj and Štrukelj were placing at European and World Championships—fourth at the European Championship Latin in Salou and fifth at the World Championship Latin in Melbourne—alongside consistent showings at international GrandSlam events, including second place at the Szombathely GrandSlam and fourth at Stuttgart.

Their strongest season came in 2009. On 7 February, they won the World Cup Latin in Antwerp, a major international victory. Throughout that year they placed second at the Kaohsiung Latin event on 25 July, fourth at the World Championship Latin in Maribor on 7 November, and third at the Shanghai GrandSlam on 13 December. In 2010, they won the International Open Latin in Koper before Batagelj and Štrukelj retired from the WDSF partnership record on 20 June.

Following his competitive period, Batagelj has worked as an educator and lecturer. Public lecture videos document his analytical approach to Latin technique, focusing on musical choice, character differentiation across dances, and Paso Doble performance. His work demonstrates the transmission of elite competitive knowledge into teaching and choreographic analysis, with particular attention to weight transfer, rhythmic punctuation, and the spatial clarity of partnering.
