Alan Fletcher

Alan Fletcher is a British DanceSport champion who, with his partner Hazel Fletcher, dominated International Latin competition from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s. The couple emerged from British amateur Latin ranks, where they reportedly won the International Amateur Latin championship in 1969, 1971 and 1972. Their transition to the professional division marked the beginning of a sustained competitive run that would reshape the landscape of ballroom Latin dance.

Alan and Hazel Fletcher claimed the British National Professional Latin championship in 1975 and 1976, establishing themselves at the top of domestic competition. In 1976 they won the UK Open Professional Latin title, a victory that preceded their most significant international achievements. Beginning in 1977, the couple won five consecutive WDC Professional Latin world championships, a sequence they maintained through 1981. During this same period, they captured the British Open Professional Latin crown in 1977, 1979 and 1980, and the UK Open Professional Latin title from 1978 through 1981—victories across multiple prestigious series that demonstrated their sustained strength and adaptability to different competition formats.

After their peak championship years, Fletcher remained active as a teacher, coach and adjudicator. A DanceSportLife lecture appearance shows him coaching on paso doble technique, working alongside later-generation world champions. The couple also created instructional media covering the complete International Latin program: cha-cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble and jive. A 2024 interview devoted to Alan and Hazel indicates their methods and competitive era continue to attract interest from dancers and students. Fletcher's work represents a bridge between the pioneering championship generations of British Latin and the professional dynasties that followed, keeping the technical knowledge of that era in active circulation.
