Biography

Nicolas Besnard is an acrobatic dancer and hand-to-hand specialist known for bringing theatrical depth to counterbalance work. He became widely recognized through Duo MainTenanT, a prize-winning hand-to-hand act that joins sustained overhead lifts, inversions and close-floor transitions with intimate partnering. The act's name plays on the French words for "now" and "hand-holding."

Besnard trained at Montreal's National Circus School and in university dance study. He performed in Cirque du Soleil's *Zumanity*, the company's adult-oriented Las Vegas production, beginning in 2005.

Duo MainTenanT, created with former French gymnast and Cirque du Soleil artist Ludivine Furnon, represented France in the hand-to-hand discipline at the 31st Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in 2010, where the duo won the Silver Medal, the Audiens Prize and the Club du Cirque Prize. The act subsequently appeared across international variety, circus and television contexts, including *La France a un incroyable talent* in 2010, Spiegelworld's *Empire* in 2013, *America's Got Talent* in 2019 and *Românii au talent* in 2020.

Besnard has also performed the hand-to-hand act with acrobat Shenea Booth, demonstrating that the concept's focus on balances, inversions and seamless weight transfer remains central across different partner configurations. His movement language emphasizes quiet force and grounded technique; transitions hide acrobatic mechanics inside embraces, turns and descents, creating continuous partnering rather than isolated tricks. Suspense emerges from slow transfers and held counterbalances as much as from height.
