Sami Yli Piipari

Sami Yli-Piipari grew up in Jyväskylä, Finland, and began ballroom dancing around age ten. His competitive career developed across both International Standard and International Latin, rather than specializing in a single discipline. Dancing with Karita Lehto, he represented Finland at the International Ballroom Dancing Championships at the Royal Albert Hall in 1994. Over the course of his partnership with Karita—later known as Karita Yli-Piipari—the couple accumulated fifteen Finnish national championship titles across Standard, Latin and 10-Dance, and reached the grand finals of World and European Professional 10-Dance competitions. They also appeared in finals at the UK Open and International Professional Rising Star events, and a Blackpool Professional Rising Star semifinal. In 2002, specialist records list them as Slovenian Open Professional Standard champions.

After his performing career, Yli-Piipari transitioned into adjudication and competition chairing. By 2014, he held certification as a USA Dance and WDSF chairman of adjudicators. His connection to the Finnish dance circuit continued after his relocation to the United States, where he has been listed as an adjudicator representing the U.S. in Finnish DanceSport competitions.

Parallel to his work in competitive ballroom, Yli-Piipari pursued an academic path in sport pedagogy and exercise psychology. He earned a PhD from the University of Jyväskylä in 2011, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a faculty appointment at the University of Memphis. He now serves as an associate professor at the University of Georgia, where he directs the Children's Physical Activity and Fitness Laboratory and co-directs the Sport Instruction Research Laboratory, focusing on children's physical activity, fitness and school-health promotion.

Yli-Piipari's dual career—teaching and judging a form that demands broad motor adaptability while conducting peer-reviewed research on motivation, education and physical activity—sets him apart in dance history. In 2019, the University of Georgia documented his work teaching health and physical education while hosting visiting sport-education students from Finland, further bridging both of his professional worlds. He and Karita have also continued teaching, conducting workshops on male and female roles and responsibilities in International Ballroom.
