About the author
Carlos Saura (1932–2023) was a Spanish filmmaker whose work repeatedly turned to flamenco as subject. After exploring the tradition through narrative cinema—notably in Bodas de sangre (1981), Carmen (1983), and El amor brujo (1986)—Saura moved toward more direct documentation. His later flamenco projects prioritised capturing the forms and the artists themselves over imposed storylines, making this 1995 film part of his late-career emphasis on preservation and ethnographic record.
