About the author

Antonio Mairena (1909–1983) was a Gitano cantaor from Seville widely considered the greatest flamenco vocalist of his generation and a major influence on postwar flamenco revival. Beyond performance, he was an intellectual who wrote about flamenco history and aesthetics, appearing frequently in Spanish cultural journals. He worked with musicologist Ricardo Molina on earlier flamenco studies and became a spokesperson for Gitano tradition as flamenco's true custodian.
