About the author

Alan Lomax (1915–2002) was an American musicologist, ethnographer, and documentary filmmaker who spent his life recording and analyzing folk music and vernacular culture, primarily in the United States and the Caribbean. Working initially with his father John A. Lomax, he became a leading figure in folk music preservation and later in ethnographic film. He was deeply committed to documenting cultures before they vanished, and his approach combined rigorous fieldwork with narrative accessibility. His archive is housed at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
