About the author
George Borrow (1803–1881) was a British writer, linguist, and traveller known for books about his journeys in Spain, Russia, and the Middle East. He was fluent in multiple languages including Romani, which gave him unusual access to Romani communities. His works are valued for linguistic and ethnographic detail but are now read with awareness of their romantic, paternalistic, and sometimes inaccurate framing of non-European cultures.
