Dansend vierkant

Also known as Dancing Square

A single steel square, 25 m high, folded and set on one corner so that it seems to balance on a point, painted the sky-blue the artist calls Marijkeblauw so that it reads against the sky in every season. It stands beside the Pleijroute (N325) at the Sacharovbrug in Arnhem-Zuid as the marker for the bridge, one of the works of the 1980–88 Masterplan Beeldende Kunst Pleijroute led by environmental artist Wim Korvinus. Marijke de Goey won the 1987 competition for the commission against Klaas Gubbels and Auke de Vries; her own site dates the finished work 1989, while several Dutch references give 1987, the year the road opened. The square rises from a 1.5 × 1.5 × 16 m foundation planted over with blue-flowering Vinca minor. Seen from a moving car it shifts from symmetric to asymmetric and at moments seems to turn — the "improbable balance" De Goey intended. In 2006 it was voted into the top five of the best Dutch works of art of the past fifty years. Do you recognise the dance?

We have not filed this one under a style. Plenty of sculptures show dancing without showing a particular dance — but if you can see a form here, telling us connects this sculpture to everything else we hold on it.
