Luchtdanser

Also known as De Luchtdanseres

A bronze female dancer by Eddy Roos balancing on her feet inside a large stainless-steel ring on a tapered base, 325 cm high and 225 cm across. It stands on the small square at the Delfshaven metro entrance (Jan Kruijffstraat, Rotterdam), where it has been since 1988; the commission was funded under the percentage-for-art rules for the metro construction, with the RET as owner. Roos was the one sculptor chosen from a field of 37 for the sketch commission; he worked from studio models and enlarged the figure himself, and showed it at the Singer Museum, Laren, before installation. He has said the figure grew out of modern-dance choreography, Indian art and Chagall's later work, and described the ring as a cosmic dance pattern of expansion and contraction; his own title for it is De Luchtdanseres (1985–87).
