Muse of Music, Dance, Drama

Not one statue but three, on a tiered fountain at the Highland Avenue entrance to the Hollywood Bowl: the Muse of Music kneeling with a lyre, the Muse of Dance caught mid-movement, and the Muse of Drama holding the masks of comedy and tragedy. George Maitland Stanley — who had modelled the Academy Award statuette a decade earlier — carved the figures with a crew of stone cutters from some 300 tons of granite quarried near Victorville; the fountain beneath them took 1,180 tons of concrete, faced with more granite. The completed monument was dedicated on 8 July 1940. The Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl completed a major reconstruction of the fountain in 2006.
