About this studio
The Arizona Lindy Hop Society, founded in 1996, preserves vintage vernacular Jazz and Blues dance and music through social dance, education, and live events. The organisation is dedicated to bringing joy into people's lives by celebrating the art form that originated in 1920s and 30s Harlem.
Classes run as progressive series at Dance Wise Studio in Uptown Phoenix (5555 N. 7th Street). They offer East Coast Swing for beginners, Lindy Hop Fundamentals, Intermediate Lindy Hop, and Advanced Lindy Hop with lifts, jumps, and tricks. Classes meet on Thursday evenings from 7:00–8:10pm (or 7:00–8:20pm for advanced) and include both instruction and social dance practice time. All ages are welcome and no partner is required. A 20-class card is available for $219, bringing the per-class cost to under $11. Private lessons are also offered as a package of 5 lessons for $395.
Beyond classes, the society runs a robust calendar of social dance events. Regular Two-Step Tuesdays feature live bands at Dirty Drummer (2303 N 44th St, Phoenix) with a Two-Step lesson followed by dancing. South Central Swing happens at the Duce (525 S Central Ave, Phoenix) with swing music and DJ. The society organises weekend workshops and special events, including a Summer Swing Fest in Mesa with classes in Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Music Theory, and more, and a Barn Dance at Mortimer Farms with live Country band and farm-to-table dining.
The society also curates multi-day and cruise experiences. Upcoming are a Country Two Step workshop in Prescott (12pm–3pm, $39/person), an 8-day Lindy and Balboa cruise to the Caribbean departing from New Orleans in February 2027, and a 4-day Country Two Step and West Coast Swing cruise from Los Angeles in November. Camp Jitterbug in Seattle (May 22–25, 2026) is an annual Jazz & Swing Dance Festival celebrating Black vernacular Jazz and Swing dances with workshops, live music, competitions, and performances.
The organisation has an education outreach programme teaching dance in public schools. Steve Conrad, founder and director, has been teaching Lindy Hop for more than 21 years and has travelled worldwide. Bernadette Smith is a dance instructor with classical training in ballet, jazz, and modern dance who performs at private events, the Arizona Biltmore, and the Phoenix Symphony.
What to expect
Your first visit
Thursday classes at Dance Wise Studio run 70 minutes: a swing dance lesson followed by social dance practice to swing music. All ages welcome, no partner needed. Drop-in rate is $15 per class, or buy a 20-class card for $219. Progressive series build on previous weeks, so consistency helps.
