About this studio
Austin Swing Syndicate meets every Thursday at Cherrywood Center for swing dancing and lessons. The evening runs from 7:15 PM to midnight, with an Intro to Swing class at 8:15 PM followed by social dancing until midnight.
The Intro to Swing class (8:15–9:00 PM, included with admission) teaches the basic six-count rhythm and footwork, partner connection, and lead/follow fundamentals. You'll learn core patterns like underarm turns, tuck turns, and other basic variations that let you start social dancing right away. No partner or experience is necessary — the syndicate rotates partners in class so you can come alone and still participate fully.
If you want to deepen your foundation, Social Dance Connections (7:15–8:10 PM, $10 add-on) covers body mechanics, partner communication, tension and tone, momentum, and rhythm, then applies these to floorcraft, musicality, and partnership. Topics vary each week. The Style Sampler (7:30–8:30 PM, $10 add-on) lets you try a new dance style each Thursday — all styles taught are common in the Austin community, so you can practise them during the social dance that night.
The venue is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. Parking is available on the street, and after 9 PM you can use the lot at The Cherrywood Coffeehouse. The syndicate also welcomes inquiries about side-room bookings for birthday parties or special celebrations — contact them at least two weeks in advance.
