Body Politic is a charitable dance organisation founded in 2012 by Emma-Jane Greig, based at Pegasus Theatre on Magdalen Road in Oxford. It specialises in hip hop dance and hip hop dance theatre, working with young people aged 5–25 across three core strands: creative learning, artist development, and productions and touring.
The organisation runs weekly hip hop classes for ages 5 and up, with no previous experience required. In 2024–25, Body Politic worked with 1,674 children and young people, delivering 5,097 attended hours. They maintain affordable pricing and offered 187 free and subsidised places during the year, targeting young people from marginalised communities and those facing barriers to arts access.
Body Politic's teaching team includes Ella Goodwin, a professional commercial dancer with over 6 years' professional work and 3 years teaching experience, who has worked with Kylie Minogue, Little Mix, Mabel and featured on Netflix Dance 100, X-Factor, Britain's Got Talent and The Brit Awards. Kyron Anthony is a professional dancer based in London who has trained in hip hop since age 7 and competed with the International Dance Organisation (IDO), winning European titles. Natalie Wong trained in Urban Dance Practice at the University of East London (graduating 2020) and has taught across different ages and abilities; her favourite styles are breakin', contemporary and hip hop.
The organisation also runs a Youth Company for ages 15–25, a Body Politic Academy, and a flagship Future Leaders Programme—a 12-month paid professional development programme launched in 2024 that supports eight diverse young artists from under-served areas. They create boundary-pushing hip hop dance theatre productions including THEM, Father Figurine, Me, Myself and I, and Reflections, and run events such as Summer Dance Camp, Summer Dance Intensive, DefendHER, and Family Dance Party.
Emma-Jane Greig, the Founder and Artistic Director, has led the organisation's growth over 13 years from a grassroots initiative into a nationally recognised charity. She creates and tours hip hop dance theatre nationally, exploring contemporary social issues and amplifying underrepresented voices. Body Politic is funded by Arts Council England, Access Sport, Public Health England, Youth Ambition, and supported by Dancin' Oxford and Oxford City Council.
