About this studio
Chattanooga Ballet is a professional dance company and school operating from two locations in downtown Chattanooga: the main studio and offices at 817-B N Market St, and annex studios (East & West) at 607 N Market St. The organisation serves through the power of dance, with a mission to bring dance into more people's lives, particularly where access to world-class dance training is limited. They work to overcome geographical, economic, and societal barriers through touring, scholarship, and community programmes.
The school offers exceptional ballet training to dancers of all ages, starting from as young as three years old. The programme aims to inspire students in their passion for dance and provide the foundations of ballet education. The school is led by Nena Widtfeldt, Director of Education and Upper School Principal, who trained at Contra Costa Ballet School under former American Ballet Theatre dancers, spent two years at Tokyo Ballet School, and holds a dance scholarship degree from Brigham Young University. Elena Bozzone serves as Lower School Principal and joined the faculty in 2024, bringing professional performance experience including roles in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Snow White, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Carmen, and Dracula with Roanoke Ballet Theatre and Gwinnett Ballet Theatre.
In performance, Chattanooga Ballet offers audiences in the region the same height of dance technique and artistry while providing dancers and choreographers professional opportunities. The company is led by Brian McSween, CEO and Artistic Director, whose professional dance career was with Joffrey Ballet, Complexions, and Aspen Ballet. He previously served as Ballet Master for Ballet Memphis under Dorothy Gunther Pugh, where he was commissioned for three works.
Beyond the main school and company, Chattanooga Ballet operates the Making Moves programme in partnership with Boys & Girls Club, The Bethlehem Center, and the City of Chattanooga. These classes are specifically constructed to provide focus, health, and artistic exploration to students in the community. The programme is coordinated by Monica Ellison, who brings professional performance credits including ensemble work with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company 2, principal work with Balance Dance Theatre in Brooklyn, and guest performances internationally, along with teaching experience across beginner-through-advanced levels.
The organisation is a 501(c)(3) charitable institution, an ArtsBuild Community Arts Partner, and is supported by grants from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Chattanooga Ballet is dedicated to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity, striving to serve students, families, and communities regardless of ethnicity, race, creed, colour, gender, or sexual orientation.
