About this studio
CJ's School of Dance has been teaching ballroom, Latin and sequence dancing in Cambridge since 1981, founded by Clive and Jenny Hurt. The school describes itself as a social and medalist dancing school committed to offering fun, friendly and expert tuition to adults aged 18 and over, from absolute beginners through to advanced dancers and professionals.
The teaching programme spans multiple styles and levels. Absolute beginners learn waltz, social foxtrot, tango, cha cha cha and jive in a relaxed atmosphere. The school explicitly welcomes people who think they have two left feet, and does not force couples to swap partners. Progression classes include beginners continuation (adding rumba and quickstep), improvers (introducing slow foxtrot and samba, plus named sequence dances like Sindy Swing and Balmoral Blues), intermediate (adding Viennese waltz and paso doble), and advanced classes for dancers who know all ten ballroom and latin dances and want to refine technique and learn new figures.
Ballroom classes run Wednesdays at 6pm (absolute beginners, full) and 7pm (beginners continuation) and 8pm (improvers) at Orchard Park Community Centre. Intermediate and advanced classes meet Thursdays at 7.15pm and 8.15pm respectively at William Collyn Community Centre in Girton. Practice sessions for advanced dancers also run Thursday evenings at William Collyn, featuring up-to-date music and short tuition in new dance trends and technique. Sequence dancing is coming soon. Private lessons are available by appointment during weekdays, including daytime, at Arbury Community Centre or Orchard Park Community Centre — ideal for those unable to attend classes, learning for weddings, cruise preparation, or professional teacher training.
The school conducts medal tests in ballroom, Latin and sequence with UKA Dance, with Clive as an examiner. Tests are private, graded from introductory through gold and beyond, and can be taken with Clive or Jenny as your partner. Monthly social dances are held at various venues around Cambridge for practising steps in a supportive environment. The school also offers coaching for cruises and can teach you dances for specific events or holiday companies, and provides corporate team-building sessions.

You'll be taught by experienced, qualified instructors in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Classes are well-structured by level, and the school welcomes complete beginners, people returning to dancing after years away, and those aiming for medal qualifications or social enjoyment. You won't be forced to swap partners, and the environment is supportive and caring.

Who teaches here
Clive Hurt is a Fellow and Examiner with UKA Dance, Licentiate and Life Member of ISTD, and Licentiate IDTA. He started teaching in Cambridge in 1981 and became one of the youngest qualified professional teachers in the area. Jenny Hurt holds an MA from Cambridge and is an Associate of UKA Dance. She completed medals with IDTA in both ballroom and Latin before moving to Cambridge in the 1980s. Together they have won the UKA Inventive Dance Competition with their Hampton Two Step and the IDTA 'Classic' Inventive Dance Competition with their CJ Cha Cha Cha.

Studio history
CJ's School of Dance was established in 1981 by Clive and Jenny Hurt. Clive began teaching in Cambridge that year while training with Rita Pover, Olga Wilmot and Martin Simmonds, and went on to become one of the youngest qualified professional teachers in the area. He has since attained multiple qualifications including Licentiate degrees with ISTD and IDTA and Fellowship with UKA Dance, and became an examiner in 1991.
