About this studio

Concierge Ballroom opened in February 2017 with a straightforward mission: to make partner dancing more accessible and approachable in Philadelphia and its surrounding areas. The studio was founded by Colleen Cheong, who transitioned from a career as a molecular biologist to become a full-time dance instructor and professional dancer after discovering ballroom, Latin and swing in 2005.

The studio teaches nearly 20 styles of dance across three main families. Ballroom styles include Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Peabody and Country Two-Step. Latin styles include Rumba, Cha Cha, Bolero, Mambo, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue and Samba. Swing includes Jitterbug and West Coast Swing. Instruction is available at all levels, from complete beginners through advanced and competitive dancers.

The teaching team includes Colleen Cheong (studio owner and instructor), Aaron Mitchell (who holds a BFA in Dance and Massage Therapy from Temple University and has performed with companies including Brian Sanders JUNK and Philadanco), Jordan Tait (who brings over 25 years of dance experience and specialises in beginner instruction and wedding first dances), Anna Saleem (with over 15 years of professional experience in International Standard, Latin, American Smooth and American Rhythm, formerly based in Manhattan), and Sat Sugita (studio manager who came to partner dancing through West Coast Swing in 2023). The studio also hosts Esther Teh as an Artist in Residence, certified in Bachata Sensual by Korke y Judith.

Group classes run on a fixed schedule: West Coast Swing on Monday evenings in three levels (Newcomer, Beginner Novice and Advanced Novice), and Latin styles on Tuesday nights with Salsa Level 1 and Intro to Salsa classes at 6:30–7:30pm and Bachata Level 1 at 8–9pm, with open practice from 7:30–8pm. Private lessons are available for social dancing, performance training and competitive coaching, including Pro/Am competition partnerships. The studio offers a New Student Offer of two 30-minute private lessons and one dance social for $59.

Beyond classes, Concierge Ballroom runs regular social dances and special events. Controla Fridays, held on the 1st and 3rd weekends of the month, feature complimentary lessons, food and alcohol for ages 21+. The studio hosts monthly themed socials—recent events have included Halloween costume socials, West Coast Swing workshops with visiting instructors, and genre-specific nights like Pasito (Bachata and Zouk), Baila Conmigo (Afro-Latin for single sapphics, 21+) and Swingadelphia Socials featuring workshops and mini competitions. Wedding packages include consultation, first dance lessons, parent dances and general confidence coaching for the reception. The studio also offers rentals for rehearsals, performances and choreography.

Studio history

Concierge Ballroom was founded in February 2017 by Colleen Cheong, who left a career as a molecular biologist to teach dance full-time. The studio was born from a desire to make partner dancing more accessible and approachable in the Philadelphia area, addressing what Cheong saw as a lack of flexible and accessible dance options at the time.
