About this studio

DANCECleveland is one of just a handful of stand-alone, dance-only presenting organizations in the United States. For seven decades, it has curated seasons of modern and contemporary dance, bringing nationally and internationally acclaimed professional dance companies to stages across northeast Ohio.

As a presenter, collaborator, catalyst, and commissioner, DANCECleveland focuses on creative educational experiences for children and adults, supports the creation of new work by leading dance makers, and works to bring the passion of modern and contemporary dance to the people of northeast Ohio. The 2026–2027 season marks the organisation's 70th anniversary, honouring founder Lillian Weisberg and featuring performances by Dominic Moore-Dunson, Charlotte Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Pilobolus, and GALLIM.

DANCECleveland commissions or co-commissions new works throughout its history by raising commissioning funds, providing residency space for dance companies, and securing theatre grants for artist rehearsal time. Recent co-commissions have included Camille A. Brown's Black Girl: A Linguistic Play and Aszure Barton's Indomitable Waltz for Malpaso Dance Company (Cuba).

The organisation delivers audience engagement through Dance Matters essays, pre-performance dance chats, post-performance Q&A sessions, and the "Make Dance Stick with You" comment board. A series called Body of Work: Dialogues on Dance has hosted master choreographers including Hélène Simoneau, Pam Tanowitz, and Ronald K. Brown in intimate settings to discuss their creative process.

DANCECleveland offers free master classes to area students, pre-professional and professional dancers with each visiting dance company. Dance Career Day (October 24, 2026, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm) is designed for high school students and parents to explore careers and pathways in dance. The programme includes sessions on career pathways, college preparation, branding, careers in concert and commercial dance, and masterclasses in modern dance or hip hop. Community Dance Day (July 25th at Playhouse Square) features free classes for all ages and abilities.
