About this studio

Groove Juice Swing, established in 2004, is Rochester's centre for Lindy Hop and related swing-era dances. The studio specializes in Lindy Hop, the original form of swing dance created in the late 1920s by Black Americans in Harlem, which evolved alongside jazz music in the 1930s and 1940s. Beyond Lindy Hop, they teach Charleston, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Blues, vernacular jazz dance, and solo line dances like Shim Sham and Big Apple.

Classes run on Wednesdays at their venue, The Historic German House at 315 Gregory St. They offer a structured curriculum across Beginner and Improver levels. Beginner series include Intro to Swing: Groovin' in 8 (focusing on 8-count footwork and promenade, flip flop, lindy circle), Intro to Swing: Movin' in 6 (6-count footwork with sendout, tuck turn, change places turn), and Intro to Swing: Swingout! (dedicated to Lindy Hop's signature move). Improver classes cover Solo Jazz Fundamentals, Make It Musical (musicality and rhythmic improvisation), and Classic Moves and Stylings (exploring original Lindy Hop dancers' techniques). Each class series runs four weeks with 75-minute lessons. Beginners also receive free entry to Lindy Jam, the weekly social dance, during their class series ($8 value per week). Package deals offer discounts: Beginner packages at $210 (16 weeks, 25% off), Improver Mini at $160 (12 weeks, 25% off), and Improver packages at $300 (24 weeks, 30% off).

The studio hosts Lindy Jam, a weekly social dance where new attendees can join a free beginner lesson at 8:45pm on Wednesdays. They also run monthly dances with themes such as the Gatsby Gala. Each year they host Stompology (a festival held 20–22 November 2026). Staff members and instructors travel to compete and learn from dancers worldwide, bringing that commitment and enthusiasm back to Rochester. The studio is a recipient of the Monroe County JumpstARTS Grant Program.

Groove Juice Swing welcomes dancers of all ages—from high school to 90+—and requires no prior dance experience. You do not need a partner; classes rotate partners to help you meet people and experience different leads and follows. The studio maintains a strict no-aerials policy for safety. They offer private or small group lessons and can provide performances and group lessons for weddings and themed events. The venue features a slick wood floor ideal for pivot and movement.
