The venue opened on August 9, 2018, after two years of fundraising by the Friends of Levitt Pavilion Dayton board, who raised $5 million to establish this community gathering space. It is part of a national network of Levitt venues founded on the vision of Mortimer and Mimi Levitt, whose own outdoor pavilion opened in Westport, Connecticut in 1974. The Dayton Levitt is managed and programmed by the nonprofit Friends of Levitt Pavilion Dayton and supported by the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation.
The 2026 season presents a broad range of music genres and artists. Recent lineups have included Ron Artis II (soul/blues/R&B), Scythian (Celtic rock), Terrance Simien (Grammy-winner performing zydeco), American Patchwork Quartet (folk and jazz fusion, with members who are Grammy winners), McGuffey Lane (country rock from central Ohio), The Levert Experience (R&B), and Bad Co. Legacy (classic rock). The August 7 concert features a pre-show performance by dancers from the Dwyer School of Irish Dance. The August 8 event celebrates the Native American community with Supaman, a Native American hip-hop artist and dancer from the Apsaalooke Nation.
In 2024, the venue provided $8 million in free programming to the community. The pavilion serves all ages and backgrounds and is designed as a public gathering space where families can enjoy professional performances without ticket cost. Levitt Pavilion Dayton opened August 9, 2018, after the Friends of Levitt Pavilion Dayton board spent two years raising $5 million to establish the venue—the fastest fundraising period in the Levitt Pavilion family. It is part of a national network inspired by Mortimer and Mimi Levitt, whose first pavilion opened in Westport, Connecticut in 1974. Mortimer, inspired by childhood memories of outdoor concerts at Coney Island, was committed to ensuring performances remained free to all. In 1999, at age 90, Mortimer sold his retail company and transferred the proceeds to the Mortimer Levitt Foundation to help communities across America establish their own Levitt venues. The Dayton venue serves as a placemaking project and catalyst for downtown revitalization, adjacent to the revitalized Dayton Arcade and the developing Fire Blocks District.
