About this studio
Lindy Hop Auckland is a community group dedicated to swing dancing across Tāmaki Makaurau. They run partnered dance classes twice weekly: Beginner and Intermediate Lindy Hop on Tuesday nights at Mount Albert Presbyterian Church Hall, and Beginner Lindy Hop plus Open Level Balboa on Thursday nights at Mt Eden Village Centre. Classes run 7:00–9:30pm with a free social dancing slot built in. No partner or prior experience is needed for beginner level; the group rotates partners throughout so everyone dances with everyone.
Classes are organised in 4-week blocks. You can drop in at any time, though joining at the start of a block (weeks beginning 25 May, 22 June, 20 July, 17 August, 14 September, 12 October, or 9 November in 2026) is recommended. Intermediate Lindy Hop requires completion of 3 beginner blocks or equivalent. Open Level Balboa welcomes both new and experienced dancers; check with the teachers or message the studio to understand the current focus.
Beyond weekly classes, Lindy Hop Auckland organises regular social events. Friday Night Stomp happens on the last Friday of each month at Auckland Guides Hall (31 July listed), featuring a range of swing styles—Lindy Hop, Blues, Balboa, Shag, Solo Jazz—from 7:30–11pm. A free Blues Taster Class runs at 7pm. The Woodchopper's Ball, scheduled for 29 August at Western Springs Garden Community Centre, is a dress-up social dance night with live swing music from 7:30–11:30pm. Te Rimutahi, a free outdoor swing dancing space in Ponsonby, happens every second Wednesday at 7pm; all swing and related styles are welcome, and volunteer DJs are wanted.
The studio emphasises community and accessibility. All classes rotate partners, removing the barrier of needing to bring or find a dance partner. The Code of Conduct is published on their website, reflecting an intentional approach to creating a welcoming environment.
What to expect
Your first visit
Turn up to Mount Albert Presbyterian Church Hall (Tuesday) or Mt Eden Village Centre (Thursday) at 7pm. You'll start with a beginner class for an hour, then join the free social dancing slot, and finish with intermediate or Balboa instruction (Thursday). Partner rotation means you dance with different people throughout, and no experience is required.
