About this studio
Swing Away runs seven teaching locations across Hamburg (Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Nord and Wandsbek), offering Lindy Hop, Swing, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Shim Sham, Boogie Woogie and Rock'n'Roll to beginners and advanced dancers alike. The school has operated since 2016, teaching through taster courses, crash courses, beginner workshops, dance workshops and private lessons for individuals and couples.
Classes are genuinely open to all: you need no prior experience and no partner to start. Beginner courses run daily with drop-in entry; weekend workshops run Monday to Friday each weekend. Private tuition is available at your location or theirs, 24/7. The studio also offers gift vouchers.
Beyond classes, Swing Away anchors a broader Hamburg swing scene. Four social dances run weekly (Mondays and Fridays in Barmbek, Wednesdays in Altona, Saturdays in Barmbek), each with a free taster course at 19:00 and social dancing until 22:00–00:00 on a pay-what-you-wish basis. A WhatsApp and Signal community of over 1,100 dancers connects the city's swing community. An online calendar curated by the New Swing Generation lists all Lindy Hop, Swing, Charleston, Balboa, Shag and Boogie Woogie events and social opportunities in Hamburg.
Wladimir Elesin (Wladi) is the lead instructor. First-time visitors are invited to drop into a taster course with comfortable shoes and light clothing; WhatsApp and Signal group access is offered in person at the first class.
