About this studio
Manchester West Coast Swing runs weekly classes every Friday evening at Tib Street Studio in the Northern Quarter, followed by social dancing until 11pm. The studio teaches West Coast Swing across three levels: Level 1 (Beginners/Fundamentals, 7:50–8:30pm), Level 2 (Improvers/Technique, 8:35–9:15pm), and Level 3 (Intermediate, 7:05–7:45pm). No partner is required — the studio rotates partners throughout each class so you dance with different people and build connections across the room.
West Coast Swing is a modern improvised partner dance danced to a wide variety of music genres, including Pop, R&B, Blues, and Hip Hop. On your first visit, you'll be introduced to the dance's basic rhythms and the concepts of lead and follow, then taught some of the fundamental moves that form the building blocks of West Coast Swing. Beginners can enjoy social dancing after just one lesson, and the studio actively welcomes new dancers to stay after class to try out the social — even on their first night.
The classes run on a drop-in basis with no booking required. Level 1 beginners should arrive by 7:45pm to be ready for the start of the class. The studio recommends that you attend Levels 1 and 2 regularly for at least 3–6 months before progressing to Level 3. Even if you've danced other styles before, you'll start at Level 1, as West Coast Swing has its own rhythm structures, footwork, and distinct technique that must be learned first.
In West Coast Swing, the leader initiates movements and guides direction, while the follower interprets and responds with their own style. Both roles allow for personal creativity and musicality, and you can choose whichever role you prefer — many people learn both. The studio emphasises that WCS is a social dance built on having fun and making connections, with a friendly and inclusive community where your next dance might be with a beginner or a world champion.
After class, social dancing runs from 9:15–11pm with a mix of different tempos to suit all dancers. The studio asks that dancers follow a Code of Conduct during all classes and events. Special offers are available: new beginners can attend for four weeks for £20, and continuing dancers for four weeks for £35.
