About this studio
Movema is a multi-award-winning registered charity co-founded in 2009 by four ethnically and socio-economically diverse women with a mission to unite people through world dance. Based in Liverpool and Bristol, the organisation has engaged over 100,000 people through accessible dance programmes across the arts, education and health sectors in the past 15 years.
The charity runs weekly adult classes exploring modern and traditional folk dance styles, with guest teachers and performance opportunities built into the programme. In Liverpool, World Fusion classes meet on Mondays 6–7pm at 24 Hope Street, and the Stronger Together women's programme runs free on Thursdays 11am–12:30pm at the same venue. In Bristol, World Fusion classes are held on Tuesdays 7:30–8:30pm at The Island. Both programmes welcome drop-ins and new members.
Beyond weekly classes, Movema runs family dance activities—the Everybody Dance Now programme has been operating in Knowle West, South Bristol for five years. The organisation also produces live performances and participates in major festivals including Africa Oyé (with a dedicated Dance Tent and creative workshops), the Dances of Diaspora festival at RWA Gallery in Bristol, Celebrate With Me community festival, and performances at Knowsley Flower Show and Inns Court Festival.
Movema's teaching spans African, Brazilian, Bollywood, Caribbean, Latin, Salsa and world fusion styles. The organisation also offers online resources—free videos in multiple styles available through their YouTube channel, including World In A Box and Unlock The Box programmes for young people. The charity has won the Epic Award (2016) for exceptional work with young people, and received nominations for the One Dance UK Community Champion Award (2022) and Community Organisation Award for Race, Religion & Faith (2023).
