About this studio
New Swing Generation has been bringing swing to Hamburg and northern Germany since 1998. As a registered non-profit cultural organisation, the studio teaches the full spectrum of swing dance styles: Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Blues, Jazz Routines, and Rockabilly Jive. Classes run at three levels — Einsteiger (beginner), Fortgeschrittene (intermediate), and Fortgeschrittene Plus (advanced) — and are designed for dancers of all backgrounds.
Lindy Hop is their flagship style: described as the classic swing dance, rooted in the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem during the 1930s, emphasising power, rhythm, flow and social connection. West Coast Swing classes focus on uptempo beats, technique, musicality and close partner work. Balboa is taught as an elegant, faster swing style. Shag classes emphasise energetic, rhythmic movement at uptempo with style and fun. Rockabilly Jive brings the 1950s spirit into the studio.
The studio runs regular monthly events: the Friday Night Blues Party (every third Friday of the month, including a 60-minute crash course) and the Balboa Factory (monthly Balboa evening with crash course, DJs and special drinks, open to all levels). They also offer crash courses and trial lessons designed for beginners wanting to try swing without commitment. Beginners are actively welcomed and encouraged to start with a trial session.
Beyond classes, New Swing Generation hosts international workshops with visiting instructors and live music events with both classic artists and contemporary swing bands. The studio celebrates swing culture holistically — the music of the 1930s–1950s (Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong) sits alongside modern swing bands like The Schwings Band, Jonathan Stout, and Mint Julep Jazz Band. The venue regularly books live performances and themed parties.
The studio is located at Boschstraße 15, Eingang D, Moritzhof, Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. Classes and events are open to members and non-members alike, though membership brings cost benefits to workshops and regular classes. The organisation is rooted in values of diversity, respect, democracy, equality and openness.
What to expect
Your first visit
First-time visitors can book a trial lesson (Probestunde) or crash course designed for absolute beginners, or attend a monthly party to experience swing socially. Classes are structured by level and style; expect instruction in fundamentals, social dancing practice, and a welcoming atmosphere open to dancers of any background.

Teachers include Alison and Söhnke, who lead Rockabilly Jive workshops across multiple levels. The studio works with international visiting instructors for special workshops. Jason Xuu, a Lindy Hop specialist from Taiwan, appears regularly as a guest instructor.
