About this studio
Puerta al Tango is Albuquerque's most inclusive tango school, housed in the iconic Las Puertas at 1500 1st St NW. The studio was voted best 2025 dance school in Albuquerque 87102 by Google Reviews. Graham Stanford, the founder and lead instructor, moved to New Mexico in 2022 after two decades restoring houses and a transformative journey through tango. In 2016, after falling off a building, he travelled to Buenos Aires to learn tango from the beginning, where he fell in love with the dance and learned to connect emotion, music and cultural context into each moment.
Classes run throughout the week: Begin Tango classes meet Mondays and Tuesdays at 6pm, and Thursdays at 12:30pm (lunch-hour) and 1st Sundays; Tango Ongoing classes advance further concepts Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:15pm. Prácticas (all-level sessions for working on technique and making friends) run 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. The studio hosts a monthly milonga, Milonga Suerte Loca, on 4th Saturdays, and incoming workshops with guest instructors including Brigitta Winkler (November 2025), Joaquin Amenabar (2026) and Olivia & Fernando (2026). Graham is currently learning with mentors Brigitta Winkler for teaching and movement (2024-present) and Joaquin Amenabar for musicality (2025-present).
The studio prioritises safe, welcoming space where students learn Argentine social tango through body awareness and human connection at their own pace. No partner is needed; you choose which role to explore (Navigator/leader or Realizer/follower), and the environment emphasises equality, harmony and consent. Students appreciate Graham's ability to teach fundamentals, close-embrace connection and the tools needed to dance tango internationally — he has danced and studied at encuentros and milongas across Argentina, Europe, Canada and the UK, from Sofia to Stockholm to Berlin.
First class is free for 505-area residents. Drop-in classes cost $17.50 with sliding scale available. Private lessons (50 minutes, for one or two people) are offered on a four-sphere contribution model: Sustaining $85–100, Community $68 (code COMMUNITY-20-APT), Scholarship $51 (code SCHOLAR-40-APT), and Benefactor $125+. Bundles of 3 or 7 lessons offer savings and can be used flexibly over months.
What to expect
Your first visit
You'll arrive at a welcoming, consent-conscious space where your first class is free (if you live in the 505). Wear casual, comfortable clothes and the thinnest shoes you have; the studio has dance socks to slip over your shoes if needed. Classes are chill and meditative, never rushed. Graham teaches from the ground up — you'll never wonder where your foot goes. No partner is required, and everyone explores at their own pace.

Graham Stanford is the primary instructor. He studied tango starting in 2005, spent nearly two years living in Argentina (1 year off-dance, immersed in culture; returns totalling over 10 months since 2016), and has danced at encuentros across Europe, Bulgaria, Canada and the UK. He currently studies with Brigitta Winkler (teaching and movement, 2024-present) and Joaquin Amenabar (musicality, 2025-present).

Graham Stanford was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and spent over two decades restoring old houses before moving to New Mexico in 2022. He first took a tango class in 2005 but spent ten years struggling and taking long breaks from the dance. In 2016, after falling off a building and surviving without injury, he decided to go to Buenos Aires and learn tango again from the beginning, where he finally fell in love with the dance and understood how to connect emotion, music and cultural context. His teacher and community encouraged him to move to New Mexico, open Puerta al Tango and teach tango full-time.
