About this studio
Swing Away has operated since 2016 across seven locations in Hamburg-Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Nord and Hamburg-Wandsbek. The school teaches Lindy Hop, Swing Tanz, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Shim Sham, Boogie Woogie and Rock'n'Roll to beginners and advanced dancers alike.
Classes range from free taster sessions (Schnupperkurse) and crash courses to weekly beginner classes, weekend workshops, and private lessons. You can join as a pair or single—beginners need no prior experience or partner. A taster session runs at 19:00, followed by social dancing from 22:00. Weekend workshops run Monday to Friday and cost €15. Regular beginner courses cost €29 and private lessons €39.
Swing Away runs social dances four times a week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in Barmbek, and Wednesday in Altona. All social dances are free entry on a donation basis. The studio also publishes the New Swing Generation calendar, listing nearly all Lindy Hop, Swing Tanz, Charleston, Balboa, Shag and Boogie Woogie events and parties in Hamburg.
Wladimir Elesin (Wladi) is the instructor and runs the school. The community includes a WhatsApp and Signal group with over 1,100 members, access to which is provided at taster sessions. All you need to bring is comfortable shoes and light clothing.
