About this studio
Swing Bandits Dance Studio runs West Coast Swing classes and social dance parties in Toronto on the third Saturday of every month. The studio is built on the principle that everyone belongs on the dance floor — regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, relationship status, ability, age, body, faith, or profession. No partner is required to participate.
The monthly format gives you flexibility: pick a class (or two) starting at 7:00pm, then stay for the dance party at 8:30pm. The Intermediate class at 7:00pm is for seasoned dancers ready to work past the basics; the topic and teacher change monthly, so you'll encounter new material and concepts each time. The Intro to WCS class at 7:45pm is designed for total newcomers, dancers learning the opposite role, or anyone revisiting the fundamentals. You'll learn a few patterns and the basic concepts that get you moving on the dance floor.
The monthly dance party begins at 8:30pm with doors open at 8:30pm. It's a relaxed, friendly space where you practise what you've learned, meet new dancers, and reconnect with familiar faces. Everyone dances with everyone — no partner needed, though you can bring one.
West Coast Swing is a smooth, improvised partner dance evolved from lindy hop and danced in a narrow lane called the slot. Unlike lindy hop's energetic bounce, WCS is known for its distinctive slotted movement where partners move back and forth along a linear path, creating a smooth and elastic style. It's danced to almost any kind of music — pop, R&B, hip hop, blues, country — which allows dancers to express themselves creatively while interpreting the music in real time. The emphasis on connection and improvisation fosters a strong partnership and encourages a playful, interactive experience that changes with every song and every partner.
Classes and the party take place at Society Clubhouse – Back Room, 967 College Street, Toronto, ON. Your first visit is free. Subsequent classes are $10 each, and the dance party is $15. Students and those travelling 50km or more get a $5 discount on entry. Cash or e-transfer payment at the door. The studio's commitment is clear: cost should never keep anyone off the dance floor. If price is a barrier, contact them and they'll sort something out.
