About this studio
Swing Patrol Berlin teaches swing dance rooted in the African American culture of the 1910s–1940s. Founded in Australia in 1998, Swing Patrol arrived in Berlin in 2011. The school is part of a global community of dancers centred on social dancing and having a good time together on the floor.
You can drop in to weekly classes at five locations across Berlin: Prenzlauer Berg (Kolle), Wedding (Panke), Friedrichshain (Frankfurter Allee), Kreuzberg (Prinzenstraße/Kottbusser Tor), and Neukölln (Rollberg/Schillerkiez). Classes run Monday through Thursday, with two levels each night—starters and improvers. Classes are taught in German and English. You do not need to book ahead or bring a partner; the school rotates partners so everyone dances with different people. Drop-in classes run almost every week; any cancellations are announced in advance.
The core curriculum is Lindy Hop, which emerged in the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the mid-1920s. The school also teaches Collegiate Shag, St. Louis Shag, Balboa, Charleston (1920s–30s), and Solo Jazz (Authentic or Vernacular Jazz). Music ranges from blues and hot jazz through swing and early rhythm & roll to occasional modern tracks. The teaching focus is social dancing—learning to relax and enjoy the floor with others—though the school occasionally creates small shows and performances with interested students.
Weekend workshops run under the "Learn to Dance in a Day" format, covering Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz (including Shim Sham), and Shag Dances (Collegiate & St. Louis). Private lessons are available for individuals, couples, and groups. The school deliberately teaches in public venues—bars, clubs, cultural centres—both because these dances emerged in such spaces and to support local communities. Thursday nights feature the Red Rhythm Swing Dance Night at Frannz Club (with outdoor dancing floor in summer).
Swing Patrol emphasises safe, inclusive spaces. The school tolerates no racism, homophobia, sexism, or intolerance. Teaching the history and cultural context of these dances—their positive and negative origins—is built into every class, preventing what the school sees as cultural appropriation.
