About this studio
Swing Patrol Berlin teaches the swing dances of the African American community from the 1910s–1940s, with Lindy Hop at the centre of the curriculum. Lindy Hop emerged in the mid-1920s in Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in New York. The studio also teaches Collegiate Shag, St. Louis Shag, Balboa, Charleston, and Solo Jazz (also called Vernacular or Authentic Jazz). Music ranges from blues, hot jazz, ragtime and swing to early rhythm and blues.
Swing Patrol operates at seven locations across Berlin. Drop-in classes run without registration or partner requirement at: Prenzlauer Berg–Kolle (Mondays 19:00 and 20:15), Wedding–Panke (Mondays 18:15 and 19:30), Friedrichshain–Frankfurter Allee (Tuesdays 18:15 and 19:30), Kreuzberg–Prinzenstrasse/Kottbusser Tor (Tuesdays 18:15 and 19:30), Neukölln–Rollberg/Schillerkiez (Wednesdays 18:15 and 19:30), and Prenzlauer Berg–Kulturbrauerei (Thursdays 18:15, 19:30 and 20:30 social dance). Classes rotate partners, so you can attend solo. Teaching is in German and English.
Two-level structure: "Starter" classes cover "Take The A Train" fundamentals; intermediate classes are titled "Drop Me Off In Harlem". An open class for experienced dancers runs Thursday at Kulturbrauerei. Half-day workshops titled "Learn To Dance In A Day" introduce Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz, and Shag to beginners without prior experience.
The studio emphasises social dance: the goal is for all participants to dance relaxed and comfortable together on the floor. Occasionally performances and small shows involve interested students. Private lessons are available for individuals, pairs and groups. Swing Patrol was founded in 1998 in Australia, opened in the UK in 2009, and has operated in Berlin since 2011. The Berlin team prioritises safe, inclusive spaces that respect all people and reject racist, homophobic, sexist and intolerant views. Teaching includes the history and social context of the dances to avoid cultural appropriation.
