About this studio

Swing&Soda is a cultural association and swing dance school based in Rome's Garbatella neighbourhood since 2008. They teach Lindy Hop, Charleston, Shag, Vintage Jazz, Slow Lindy, and Ladies Project (technique & style) across multiple levels: beginner classes, intermediate (levels 1–2–3), advanced, and invitational classes.

The school is directed by Danilo and Valentina, who began collaborating in 2010 as teachers, choreographers and artistic directors. The teaching team also includes Mike, Claudia, Donatella and Giada. The school's philosophy, drawn from the Savoy era, emphasizes that dance ability matters above all else — the question was always "Can you dance?", never about who you were.

Swing&Soda hosts regular themed events including exhibitions, workshops, seminars, social dances and cultural events. They run both in-person classes at their venue and online courses. The school's performance group, Happy Hoppers, was formed in 2017 under the artistic direction of Danilo and Valentina and represents the school at events.

The school regularly hosts international guest teachers and multi-day workshop weekends. Past workshops have featured instructors including Fabien and Lisa, Ben Cook and Trisha Sewell, Michael and Evita, Jamin Jackson, Nathan Bugh, and others. The Swing Triad series has run multiple seasons, offering 8-hour weekend intensives in Lindy Hop, Lift & Drops & Aerials, and Slow Dance (Blues).

Swing dances themselves are rooted in African-American culture from Harlem, New York in the 1920s, with Lindy Hop reaching peak popularity in the 1930s–1940s. Swing&Soda's mission is to teach swing as an expressive, energetic and passionate dance form while spreading the rich cultural heritage that accompanies it.
