About this studio
The Alexandra Dance Academy was established in 1990 by Denise Ponsonby, a Royal Ballet School graduate who trained professionally and toured Europe with The Vienna Festival Ballet Company. The academy operates from studios on Howard Road in Brighton's creative community, offering classes in Imperial Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre Faculty, Tap Dance and Street Dance for students from Pre-school through to late teens.
Teaching follows the Imperial Classical Ballet syllabi, which guides instruction in correct and safe technique across all age groups and levels. Students work towards examinations with The Imperial Society for the Teaching of Dance (I.S.T.D.), from beginner through to Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 major grades. The academy emphasises sound basic technique combined with understanding of co-ordination and musical interpretation.
The faculty includes Denise Ponsonby (Principal), Rachel Mills, Kerry Mace and Danielle Ashton. Adult classes are also available, including Pilates on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Just Jhoom on Wednesday evenings.
Beyond regular classes, students benefit from performing in the academy's show every 2 years. The school is accredited to I.S.T.D. and maintains a fun but disciplined learning environment. Two beautifully furnished studios with specially sprung dance floors and mirrored walls are available for hire when not in use for academy classes.
