About this studio
Tiempo Latino Dance Company has been teaching Latin dance in Reno since 2017. The studio was founded by Gerzon Chaves, who moved to Reno at age 16 from Costa Rica and spent over 20 years social dancing before opening the school. His vision is to build community through dance regardless of background, and to train dancers from the ground up to reach professional performance standards.
Gerzon leads all instruction and has trained in salsa, ballroom, ballet, and capoeira. He has competed and won at Dancing With The Tahoe Stars and works with local youth programmes including Boys & Girls Club, Doral Academy, Alpine Academy, and Reno Housing Authority. His philosophy is that dance training should be cost-effective: Level 1 group classes are $10 and most social events around town are free.
The studio offers group classes in salsa, bachata, cumbia, and ladies styling across four levels (Level 1–4), private lessons, and seven competitive dance teams. The teams range from Tiempo Latino Beginner Salsa team to YAMULEE Project Reno, the highest level offering. Specialized teams include FUERZA JASSO RENO Bachata (choreographed by Sergio Jasso from Mexico), Sensation Bachata Ladies (by Lu Taragano from Argentina), and YAMULEE LADIES (by Laura from Yamulee Pro). Teams train twice yearly: spring to summer for local performances and travel to Sacramento and Las Vegas; fall to winter for major festivals in San Francisco, San Diego, and The Reno Latin Dance Festival.
Classes run Monday through Wednesday at the two-room studio. The class structure works like video-game levels: most people spend one week to a month on Level 1 (learning basics and 2 turns), then progress through Level 2 (6 turns, about one month), Level 3 (advanced combinations), and Level 4. You only need to learn 10 moves total to graduate as an intermediate dancer. Private lessons are available by calling or texting Gerzon directly. The studio hosts free crash-course classes at social events on Thursdays and Fridays, teaching about 4 basic turns before the night's dancing.
If cost is a barrier, the studio offers over 2 free classes per week. You can drop in a few minutes before any class and sign up at the door, or register via the Gym Desk app. Private lessons can be taken solo or with a partner and are customizable to your goals.
