About this studio
The Toronto Swing Dance Society (TSDS) was founded in 1989 and is Canada's longest-running and largest swing dance group. It operates as a not-for-profit community organization run entirely by dedicated unpaid volunteers, which means they can offer high-quality instruction at the lowest possible cost.
TSDS runs a structured programme year-round: weekly classes on Monday evenings for 10 months of the year, regular monthly dances also running 10 months of the year, and world-class weekend workshops featuring high-calibre teachers. Classes are divided into beginner and intermediate levels. The intermediate class requires solid knowledge of the basics; TSDS recommends three repeats of the beginner level before advancing. You do not need to bring a partner to classes or dances—the group rotates partners during classes so you dance with several people, and at Friday dances it is normal to arrive solo or ask someone you didn't come with to dance.
Classes are held at Beverley Halls, 206 Beverley Street, Toronto. The current schedule includes West Coast Swing (taught by Michelle Regal, Sept 14–Nov 2) and Hustle (taught by Jason Ng, Nov 9–Dec 21). Class times are 7:30–8:30 pm for intermediate and 8:45–9:45 pm for beginner. Prices are $55 for members or $70 for non-members (which includes membership). All levels of dancers are welcome at TSDS events, from beginners through advanced. Friday dances include a swing lesson in the early evening to introduce newcomers to the dance style.
The venue offers 17 free parking spots underneath the building, plus free street parking on Beverley after 9 pm and on Cecil Street until midnight. Public transport is accessible via Queen's Park station on the University line (a 4-block walk west to Beverley, about 8 minutes) or the College streetcar to St. George.
